Summer 2009

Summer has been splendid this year. We travelled a ton last summer. Overwhelmed me. This summer Charley's summer activities have kept us home a little bit more. It has been nice to have something to get up early for that then leave us with a full day to enjoy summer. Our summer has been full of :

  • slip and slides
  • playdates with friends
  • sprinklers
  • Popsicles
  • sandbox fun
  • bike rides
  • chalk
  • gardening
  • swinging
  • playgrounds
  • strawberry picking
  • trips to grandmas
  • the beach
  • the pool
  • swimming lessons
  • t-ball
  • soccer
  • walks
  • library
  • parades
  • fireworks
  • fishing
  • garage sales
  • a new nephew
  • the cottage
  • water balloons
  • the zoo
  • sprinkler parks
  • rainy days
  • sunny days
  • perfect days
  • ice cream cones
  • corn on the cob
  • watermelon
  • boat rides
  • etc.
But this afternoon was probably one of my favorite of the entire summer. We live very close to this fabulous fitness center. We are not members for many reasons...mainly I don't think I can commit to using it with the kids being so young. The fitness center has a wonderful outdoor zero entry pool with two big water slides. We have not been to it...until this afternoon. I have hesitated going by myself with the boys because I really had no idea what it entailed. But this afternoon a friend with three little girls offered to let us join them as guests. The pool was perfect for both the boys. I sat in the shallow water with my mommy friend and Henry toddled around happily. Charley was a fish. This was the first time where I was completely blown away by his swimming skills. He watched his friend Sophie dive down under the water and swim a bit. I watched him take that in and the next thing I knew...he was swimming around. Under and over and all around! Unbelievable. Obviously he wasn't swimming...like in deep water but he was for sure confident and enjoying the water to the extreme. He even went down the big waterslides a few times. All of a sudden at least 6 mom's from my Mom's group showed up. Charley was in pure heaven with many of his friends. I was in delight standing around chit chatting while watching the kids play! We stayed from 3:45-6 and returned home for a quick dinner and to bed my waterlogged boys went. I am really glad we did not do this earlier in the summer because it would have been painful to know that such a perfect pool was within eyesight of our house. I am determined to budget in the membership dues and discipline myself to use the club...so that next summer we can be there every afternoon during the bewitching hour when everyone gets crabby in our house.

Thank you Jessie for baptizing me into the club pool. It was fabulous!

We have a few weeks of summer left. Big plans ahead. Almost everyday we have something fun and most of it is free fun! The best! I am pretty sure my boys have had a good ol' fashion splendid summer. Quiet days of at home fun with some pretty special outings sprinkled in there too. Tomorrow daddy will spend a summer day with us! Can't wait to see what adventures we will have tomorrow.

One More!

Henry has taken to using the 1 more phrase. He puts up one finger and does his own impression of the phrase, "One more?" He uses it correctly most of the time:
- one more minute to play
- one more push on the swing
- one more snack
- one more book

....but if you just say no more to him he will also insist on one more....just like in this clip. Sorry it is a little long but I am biased and love capturing them in everyday fun...especially with daddy.

Maybe....

Maybe, my boys won't find value in the fact that I am writing this blog for them. But if I could get a peek at my mom's world when she had us all home for a summer and it was just a random Tuesday morning--- I would love to know her thoughts, feelings...I would love to know what each of us was doing and what she was doing. So I do think that someday they might read this and find value. I was also thinking that if anything , yes morbid and sad, but if anything were to happen to me this would give them a little glimpse into who I was as their mama. Anyways...I have been trying to capture Henry running in the last week. It has been tough. But his darn run is so damn cute. He gets his one hand into a fist and starts chugging along. His other arm swings more normal but the one arm just works so hard to help him run faster and faster. Here is the best I could do.

Do you know what?

Today Uncle Greg came to spend the day. His time in MN is coming to a fast end and even though I think we will see him more when he moves to MI it is still hard to see that the relative living closest to us is now moving far away. So today he came to hang out with the boys. He got here around ten and that is when we heard, "Uncle Greg, do you know what?" Charley's phrase that often times starts much of what he wants to tell people is "Do you know what?" Today it occurred non-stop and Uncle Greg being the great uncle constantly said, "I do not know what Charley. Tell me." Which quieted Charley for a moment because he had to think about that....Uncle Greg didn't know. I think Charley probably says, "do you know what?" to me all the time but I just say, "What?" I don't notice until I am aware of him asking others. I said to Greg as our day together was ending, "I don't think I say that all the time?" and he replied, "I don't know anyone that says that all the time."

So.....in keeping with today's theme...

Do you know what? Today Uncle Greg arrived at 10 and we set off to the park to fish.

Do you know what? We went fishing and caught many bluegill and even a painted turtle.

Do you know what? We enjoyed corn on the cob, grilled cheese, and apples for lunch.

Do you know what? While Henry napped Charley biked with his Uncle Greg.

Do you know what? After Henry woke up we went swimming. Charley even jumped off the diving board.

Do you know what? It was a great day and both boys are quiet and in bed and sleeping by 7:30!

Do you know what? Charley and Henry are very lucky to be loved by many special Aunts and Uncles. Each one is unique and gives them such special attention. Thank you Uncle Greg for taking time today to just hang out with us. I for sure enjoyed the company too!

Lucky Mama!

I will take this for as long as he will give it to me.

After naptime snuggles - it is how he transitions from sleepy guy to awakened trouble maker.

August thoughts -

August hits me hard. It always has. Even before kids it was the time when summer ended and I returned to the school routine. Every year after the cottage I headed back to school to start getting in the groove. It was a time of fresh starts and new goals. Lately, I have had many moments where I step back and realize how lucky I am. I am finding moments that I appreciate that are small and simple. Like...

---Charley and Elly so excited over red Popsicles and taking them outside and sitting at the picnic table enjoying them while chatting up a storm.
---an afternoon play date with a good friend
---grocery shopping with just Henry and getting everything that was on my list.
---sitting on the curb finishing a really good book while the boys putter with outside toys.
---listening to laughter and watching my boys romp with their daddy. They are in heaven.
---unloading the dishwasher in the morning and looking over to my boys enjoying their breakfast. Henry might be picky but he is a determined eater.
---lunch on a blanket in our yard.
---watching Henry pick tomatoes from our garden.
---free car washes from the dealership - entertainment plus a clean car.
---trying a new recipe in the crockpot
---taking a moment to weed the front walk garden
---Henry climbing up on my lap at an out of the blue moment during the chaos of the day to rest his head on my chest and sigh.
---etc.

These moments cause me pause and peace. I am realizing more often lately how precious my boys are and how quickly they are growing up. Ed has been working extremely hard lately and he does this to provide for us and I am so grateful that as he goes to work each day - I am able to stay home and love up our boys.

I do miss teaching, especially this time of year when friends are returning to their classroom, their personal passion. They are re-energized and ready for a new start, with a new group of miracles that they are gifted each fall to lead in their journey of learning. This was always my favorite time of the school year. Catching up with teacher friends I hadn't seen all summer, setting up my classroom, new plan books and new ideas, a list of students who have me wondering how these little people would interact, and the excitement of knowing they would become part of my family for this upcoming school year. I have found that I still find this time in August as a time when I feel antsy to organize, plan, and decorate....so I get out my calendar, start rearranging the house, and look for something new to add or change in the house, since I don't have a classroom to set up and lesson plans to start brainstorming. In the last week I think I have reorganized or cleaned out almost every cupboard and drawer in the kitchen. I am in the process of cleaning out my closet and dresser. And people think I am odd for coming up with silly activities to do with Charley, but that is a strength as a teacher and I can't turn it off. I love it. So fall will be filled with fun.

I also find that in August I start to set goals...it is my new year. Even though I am not teaching, the school calendar is ingrained and so important to me. It is a time of year to start fresh.

Having spent the last two school years at home I now wonder how I would manage it if I were to choose to go back to working and being a mom. I know I could do it because I did it once. I appreciate just focusing on my family but I also miss the part of me that was "Mrs. Wroblewski first grade teacher". I do believe that it added a personal happiness that was all mine. I will go back. I will be ready and passionate to start again. Meanwhile, I will appreciate all that is and relish each day as my boys quickly grow up. August is my Happy New Year!

Hunting for treasure...

My friend Molly shared with me a little activity her mom did with her when she was little. And I gave it a try up at the cottage. I wrapped up some little treasures in tinfoil (not necessarily new but match box cars, little animals etc.) You have to make sure they weigh enough to sink. Then I tossed them out into the water and Charley and his friend CJ had to hunt for them. They sparkle like treasures. Once they found them they got to excitedly open them to see what treasures they uncovered. It got them in the water! Then they ended up wrapping up things and tossing them back in. Success!

I feel confident...

that if there was a fire, my four and a half year old would know what to do. This was the discussion at breakfast this morning:

Charley: If there is a fire we get out and go to our "meeting box".

Mama: Meeting box? Where is our meeting box?

Charley: Our mailbox is our meeting box. If there is a dog you put it on the leash and take it out too.

Mama: But what if you can't find the dog.

Charley: Then you still go out to the "meeting box" but you will have to get a new dog.

Mama: No, the fireman will go in and get the dog. But Charley what if your door is closed and the handle of your door is hot...do you open your door?

Charley: No, that would mean a fire is out there.

Mama: So if you are scared in your room what do you do?

Charley: You throw your toys and stuff animals out your window so the firemen know you are there and they will use a ladder to come get you.

Mama: If you are scared do you hide in the closet?

Charley: Yes.

Mama: NO! Do not hide because the firemen want to get you as fast as they can.

Charley: If there is a fire by you you hop, jump, and roll.

Mama and daddy: No, you Stop! Drop! and Roll!

Charley: Oh yeah. ha haha ha!

He informed us he learned this when the fireman came to visit at his park program. I love to hear what he learns.

Grace in Small Things #15

Today my life was graced with rain. It will do wonders for our lawn and garden. It gave us a chance to take a break from the sunshine. On a rainy day I appreicate -

1. Lazy dark mornings when everyone sleeps a little longer...even if it is just 10 minutes.

2. An indoor adventure that makes me realize that I can do so much with my boys on my own because they are easygoing, kind, good listeners. They get that a car ride means a fun destination.

3. Having my boys help me clean out three kitchen drawers...the junk drawer was the most fun for them. Henry let out many squeals over silly little treasures.

4. Ed arriving home for an early dinner and lots of romping with the boys. Is it bedtime yet?

5. A tidy kitchen. It feels good to start the weekend without a pile of dishes on the counter.

Another day, Another Outing

I grumble many mornings when my boys are up so early and I know I have friends who have children that sleep until 8 or even 8:30. But then there are rainy mornings like today when we are up around 6:30 and by 8:30 we have been cozy, relaxed, productive, and ready and out the door heading somewhere exciting. Maybe the rest of the world is waking up but we are on our way to the Children's Museum. We get there early when there is hardly anyone there. We are free to explore without the tremendous crowds. We have lunch and are home in time for a quiet afternoon where mama gets a few things done, Henry naps, and Charley plays and enjoys a cartoon. I appreciate being at these fun places when they open - when we almost feel like we are the only ones enjoying this special place. We are members at the Children's Museum only because each person from 1-100 has to pay 8.95 and once a family of 4 goes twice you have practically paid for the membership. So we go often but not too often. It is special place that Charley thinks is a treat. We have been there when Henry slept, when Henry sat in a stroller, when Henry crawled, when Henry toddled about, and now as PLAYED! So fun to watch him grow!
